The darkness came and went, like a heartbeat. Sciatica opened her eyes, her vision blurred but rapidly clearing. She blinked in surprise, her vision cleared. She was outside, but not in the park. This was a moor; it reminded her of pictures she’d seen of Scotland. One more thing came to Sciatica now that she was awake: a fierce hunger. Walking around aimlessly, Sciatica began to worry, because her location wasn’t the only difference about wherever she was. The ground felt… ground-y-er. The air was softer and cleaner. And most strikingly, Sciatica felt lighter and almost like a mist. Probably the hunger, she thought. Kneeling by a bush, Sciatica looked closely. The leaves were a silvery-blue color, glossy. The bark was silvery-white, it was flaky and looked like it could peel off easily. And there were berries. Bucketfuls of them. Sciatica picked one and held it in her hand; it was a very pale white similar to the color of the bark. Hoping with all her heart that it wasn’t poisonous, Sciatica popped it into her mouth and took a bite… …then grabbed a handful of the berries and shoved them in. “These are freakin’ delicious! Ni-” she stopped short, remembering her friend Nicole wasn’t there. Nicole would have loved these, they tasted something like blueberries and strawberries put together. Her eating pace slowed, though, when Sciatica remembered food poisoning sometimes took hours to show symptoms. Whatever, I don’t give a ****… she thought, and continued throwing …
